Peace and Non-violence This course is designed to provide an exciting mix of ideas, resources, and experiences on nonviolence and peace education, with application to conflict resolution, problem-solving, and human relationships. A successful training program based on the American nonviolence tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be introduced, with the intention that students will pass it on. The close ties between this tradition and the musical, dramatic, and visual arts traditions of the American Civil Rights Movement, and of human rights in general, will be explored. The relationships among several nonviolence, social skills, diversity, mediation, and peacemaking programs, will be discussed, as well as the research and resources available on these programs. Participants will work together to develop ideas and program material to use in their own schools, families, and other settings. It is an all-day, 5-period course, with four periods devoted to the syllabus, and the fifth, or practicum period, devoted to one of several late-afternoon or evening programs. |
